Ocean Education Programs

Our education programs aim to educate our community and encourage the conservation of the oceans. We wish to increase ocean literacy for all Australians and visitors to the ocean realm.

We offer the following programs for schools:

  • Whales 101 – Presentation about humpback whales and their migration. Suitable for Year 1 to 4 students.
  • Whales 201 – Presentation about humpback whales, their special adaptations, threats they face, and what we can all do to care for our oceans. Suitable for Year 5 and above.

Laura gives talks to children at local libraries and talks to adults at various venues. These talks can be followed by an adventure out to meet the whales: Bring your class out on a whale watch adventure to learn about whales and the oceans. Students fill in activity sheets or data sheets to make this an immersive learning experience. Suitable for Year 4 and over. The student-to-adult ratio is 4 to 1. Suitable for classes that have had the learning presentations at their school.

PUBLIC TALKS:

  • Whales in the Gold Coast bay – mother and calves – An all-ages presentation suitable to clubs, boaters, and the general public.
  • Historic Whaling in Australasia – A fascinating talk about post-WWII whaling and the collapse of the whale population.

SPECIAL TALKS: FUNDRAISING EVENTS:

  • Whales, Wine and Sea Tales – An adult audience talk about the life of whales, mating, calving and life as a whale.

DAY OUT AT SEA AS A RESEARCH ASSISTANT:

Join us in our small RIB to meet the whales and collect data on them. Suitable weather and sea conditions pending. Must be flexible and comfortable out at sea for a few hours, possibly getting wet and windblown as we search for humpback whales and their calves. You can choose to help collect data on special data sheets, time dives, or take photos for ID. You can also choose to shoot videos of our encounters, or you can just relax and learn about the research roles as you enjoy being in the presence of whales. RESEARCH DONATION required.
