The Forgotten Shore Whaling Station

The historic catches of humpback whales in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland.

This report details a little-known whaling station in New Zealand’s Hauraki Gulf, where whalers established a modern whaling station that operated from 1956 to 1962. Significantly, they caught whales on their southern migration through the Gulf and found that they had fresh prey in their stomachs.

By examining the catching reports of the Whangaparapara and Tory Channel stations between the 1950s and 1960s, researchers Laura Torre-Williams and Emmanuelle Martinez created and presented an informational poster for the New Zealand Marine Sciences Society.
